How to Use Design to Promote Togetherness at Home

When your career is demanding and free time is scarce, it’s important to make every precious moment count. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to pull out all the stops every time you and your honey sit down to dinner… unless you want to.

But instead, there are some simple touches you can make in your space to set yourself up for memorable, well-spent time with loved ones.

Today I’m sharing 3 easy tips for a well-planned space that will bring family and friends together.

Tip 1: Create Furniture Clusters & Defined Spaces

Float furniture away from the walls and cluster them to promote togetherness and conversation… but make sure the amount of furniture is appropriate to the size of your family or the number of friends and colleagues you typically host.

For example, a small group with too many seating options won’t feel as intimate; a large gathering with just enough seating options might feel cramped. Use your best judgment.

If you have an open concept space, you can also use an area rug or statement lighting to help create a defined, comfortable space.

Speaking of lighting...

Tip 2: Use a Combination of Lighting

Lighting is another important aspect of bringing people together. I suggest having a combination of functional and ambient lighting with dimmers. This flexibility will help you set the mood for any occasion with ease.

Candles are another simple touch that creates instant ambiance and will bring your loved ones (or guests) a little closer.

Tip 3: Use Accessories to Set the Tone

Whether you’re spending time with a few loved ones or entertaining a group, the overall design of your space isn’t going to vary much from occasion to occasion. Accessories will.

The dishes and serving ware you use, the napkins or tablecloths, even candles and centerpieces can set the perfect tone. Use your fine china to turn a “night in” with your partner into a special evening or select a floral centerpiece to transform a friendly gathering into a memorable event.

These simple, almost effortless touches make a difference in how you perceive your time together—and how you enjoy it.

See? These aren’t so tough. And they’re all things you can set up in advance for whenever the occasion arises… or when you turn an ordinary event into an occasion. ;)
